It all started when two new friends from a Retreat Workshop that I taught in Raleigh, North Carolina, purchased mid arm quilting machines. I'd made an offer to teach them feathers, and lo and behold, they came up to where I live, and we played at making feathers all day!

We had a great time, and I feel confident that they're quilts will be decorated with feathers in the near future!

Then, two friends of mine from here, Shawn and Sue, came over for a day of the same! I loved being with them, they're both incredibly talented, but, best of all, it was truly fun to share my knowledge with good friends! It just made for a truly wonderful day... fun, feathers and fellowship!

The response has been great, so in the near future, we'll be posting a new class to the website (www.theniftyneedle.com) called "Feathers and Flourishes"! I'm really excited about this as it will be a 'private', all day class for the new to intermediate mid and longarm quilters! I so wish I'd had something like this available to me when I first got started. It took me about 3 months to self-learn how to make feathers, and these ladies were practically pro's after just a day!

They'll learn everything...from pinning, to floating, ruler and feather work, background fills, and best of all, walk out with a "sampler"! I just love this and can't wait to get the sample done to post to the website! Talk about motivation; sewing, quilting with others, always does it for me!!!!

So, enough for now. Be sure to check the website over the next couple of weeks for this exciting new class!

Always in Stitches.....
Karen

A Month of Milestones

I can't believe June is almost over, July almost here. I titled this post "A Month of Milestones", but realizing how long it's been since I posted, maybe it should be "Months of Milestones". So much has happened! It seems you just get "caught up" and before you know it, well, they say "time flies" for a reason!!!

I lost one of my younger sisters, very unexpectedly, on Jan 01 this year. She was only 49, and after losing my mother in law last year, I think it hit me hard that life is so, so precious! There's no crystal ball, no magic mirror, no way of knowing What life will hand us. Or when.

So, this month, I choose to celebrate. My oldest son just graduated from High School. And do you know, the minute all those Seniors started marching out on the stage, I started crying. A reaction I didn't expect; but still...! Last night we had my daughter's 18th Birthday Party (OMG)! And, I too, celebrated a Birthday (of course, I'm not as excited about sharing my age as she is!!!!).

In addition, I finished the last edit for my new book, "Prairie Point Pizzazz", coming out in November, published by Martingale. That last edit is always something! You've got the photos and the illustrations, and somehow, that's when it becomes "real". Yup, this is really going to happen!

We've updated the website, shot a YouTube video, added a host of new workshops, and even products you can purchase! Vince (my husband and BESTEST FRIEND) has retired from 29 1/2 years in the Navy, and now works in the civilian sector, and also manages my website (Thank you Honey!).

So, lots going on! I'll have more to tell you all next week, enough for now. Hope you all are finding reasons to celebrate as well! Life, after all, is precious!
Karen

Happy Thanksgiving!

Hi All!

Just wanted to take a moment and wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving! Amidst the hustle and bustle, the planning, preparation and cooking, I've had a few minutes to just think. And I realize that I have so much to be Thankful for!!!!

I'm so glad for my husband of 25 years, my love for you just keeps growing. Thankful for my children, who surprise me daily (one way or another). I'm so Thankful for my Mom and all she's taught me; glad I had the opportunity to spend time with my Mother in Law before she passed. I miss her ever so much!

I could go on and on, but lastly, I'll just say that I'm incredibly Thankful for the many friends I've made through quilting. Not only do I love all aspects of quilting, but I have made some of the best friends through it as well.

I hope you all have a great Thanksgiving, that you, too, have much to be Thankful for. I've heard it said that it's always better to count your blessings...I suppose today is a good day for that!

Enjoy,
Karen

Thanks to the Cotton Club Quilters

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 134px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_pdz2tzToAWc/TN2702bwG4I/AAAAAAAAAE0/niR2T6Dubpc/s200/IMG_8271.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5538789633375083394" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 134px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_pdz2tzToAWc/TN27bA7z0vI/AAAAAAAAAEs/rQ23n-9sd84/s200/IMG_8297.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5538789189517300466" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 134px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_pdz2tzToAWc/TN27ao0D-QI/AAAAAAAAAEk/3iQkwJ5W0_s/s200/IMG_8287.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5538789183042353410" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 134px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_pdz2tzToAWc/TN27ZzK-WoI/AAAAAAAAAEc/BbPt1coR42o/s200/IMG_8267.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5538789168642939522" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 134px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_pdz2tzToAWc/TN27ZoYJ--I/AAAAAAAAAEU/e8VwBQ6wZo0/s200/IMG_8255.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5538789165745437666" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 318px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_pdz2tzToAWc/TN26zmQe5BI/AAAAAAAAAEM/qZAGwRRbMI4/s320/014.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5538788512341353490" />

I owe a HUGE "Thank You" to all the gals in the Cotton Club Quilt Guild! I just got to spend the most wonderful weekend with them in Raleigh, N.C.

It was their "Retreat", and they kindly invited me in to do a trunk show and teach a class in prairie point quilts, from the book to be released in September. My friend, Phyllis, accompanied me, which made it an even better weekend for me! My long-time friend, she's always there when I need her!!!

Here's the thing, it was their Retreat, but I'm certain that I'm the one who came away with the most! I got to spend some quality time with my bestfriend, made a whole bunch of great new friends, and got to share one of my greatest passions. I love quilting and the people involved in it! There's nothing better than spending a weekend sharing, creating, laughing, and just plain havin' fun! And there's always something to learn!

Thank You to my new friends. I so enjoyed it, appreciate your humor and goodwill, your talent and insights, but mostly~ just the opportunity to get to know you all! You're the best!
Karen

New Book Contract!

Hi All!

Again, I have been remiss. Getting home after Mom passed, going straight back to work, and now, a new book contract! While I'm INCREDIBLY excited, I also feel pretty pressured! It seems I'm always running, running, running!

However, all that should change soon. I put in my "notice" at work, and have decided to pursue qulting as a full time business. I strongly feel that whether you succeed or fail, it should never be because you didn't give it 100%!!!!! I agonized on How, How, How, I could conceivably do both....work full time, and do the kind of quilting I truly envision. And the answer was, I couldn't!

Alicia Keys can strap an "S" on her chest and be Super woman, but , alas, I couldn't do the same! So, that's OK, I can, and will put two "S's" on my chest and be a "Super Stitcher"!

The new book, tentatively titled "Prairie Point Pizzazz" will be released September 2011, and with this technique, well, you can add a prairie point to any half or quarter square triangle, giving your quilts new dimension! POPPABILITY! It is an exciting new concept, and one I hope will be embraced by the quilting community!

So, if you're of a mind....well, say a prayer, wish me luck, and know I'm thinking of you!

dREAM, cREATE. iNSPIRE!

It's in your hands!
karen

It's Good To Be Home

Well it took a little while, but it sure is good to be home! I finally feel like I have my feet back underneath me! Hard to believe that I had to make an adjustment, but there it is, I did. Heck, took a wee bit of time just to figure out where the pots and pans were again!

I finally got a chance to get in my sewing room and spent one day just reorganizing! Now instead of lots of piles of fabric....well, I still have lots of piles, but now of projects! But, it sure feels good to go in there and have a game plan. For Quilters, sometimes there's nothing more calming than re-acquainting one's self with their stash. To realize there are so many more quilts to be made! So many possibilities!

I'm off on Monday and Tuesday, and while I'd planned on doing housework, I think maybe it can wait! Instead, I believe I'm going to use those two days to indulge my creative urges, to re-bond with my sewing machine, to see some of the possibilities! After all, it's the possibilities that keep us going!

Have a great week y'all!
Karen

Jennie Miles 1941-2010

It's been a long time since I posted; that's because I was in Monatana caring for my Mother in law, diagnosed with cancer in February. Sadly, Mom lost her hard fought battle on July 6th.

I went to Montana in March and was with Mom, caring for her until she passed away. Now that I'm back home and have the chance to reflect, I realize it was one of the greatest opportunities of my life! Yes, it was very difficult! Yes, there were many a day when I cried my heart out! And Yes! It was worth it!

Many of us are fortunate to have people in our lives who's impact may not be felt immediately, but is oh, so lasting. That was my mother in law, Jennie, my 2nd Mom! I loved her so much, and feel it was a priviledge and an honor to show her how much I cared by taking care of her, spending precious time with her. and at the end, honoring her wishes.

This morning, I checked the bluebird box in our yard, noted there were 5 eggs, and instinctively went to call her. No, this isn't the first, and probably not the last, time that this has happened. I cry because I'm sad that she's no longer with us.

then I realize...maybe she is. She certainly "lives on" in my heart, mind and memories! She will always be a part of me, one that I thank God for!

Mom, I love you! And I miss you ever so much! Thank You for all you were and all you continue to be! And I have found that maxim to hold true, especially in the quilting world!
AS I sit here in Montana, knee deep in snow in May, I realize how isolated I have felt. Coming out here to care for a loved one, not knowing ANYONE, my only reprieve has been on the rare occassion I can bond with my sewing machine!
Well, in order to sew, one really should have fabric. So I wandered in to a delightful quilt shop on Main St in Bozeman. Lisa, the owner, and I started chatting, and ended up setting up a trunk show and book signing. While there, I was so warmly welcomed by the staff, had an absolutely incredible afternoon of sewing, signing and making friends, that when it was time to return to the real world, I had to fight back tears!
I can't tell you all how very much I miss my 'quilting buddies', the comaraderie' and good times that go along with sharing. So, I say Thank You! to Lisa and Main Street Quilting. You gave me a day to hold on to, a wonderful memory, and a reminder that quilters everywhere are the best!
Karen

CHOICES

Have you ever noticed how many choices we have the opportunity to make each and every day? As I've sat here in a hospital with Mom for the last month, it's given me alot of time to observe, think, reflect and discover.

Before this all happened and I had to work, well, I didn't even think about what to wear...a uniform. Or whether to go to work, HAD TO in order to get paid! So those were pretty easy, 'no brainers' if you will.

But here, every day we're faced with new challenges, new choices. And sometimes, it's the "choosing" that seems to be the hardest part. Once decided on a course of action, well, we move forward, usually with conviction.

I guess we all want to make the right choices (all the time), but life isn't that way. And it's OK. We choose, we learn, and maybe we choose differently next time; maybe not. I think, no, believe, that it's the whole range of emotions, ability to feel and express them, and commitment to move forward that keeps most of us going. Life isn't always easy, yes, there are challenges, but it's how we choose to live with them that define us.

God, please help me to make the right choices today!
Karen

Break out the Sewing Machine!

Oh how I'm itching to break out the sewing machine! As you all know, things have been tough for my mother in law! I recently made her the "Sun Kissed Roses' quilt from the book to use as her "therapy" quilt. And you know what I discovered? That quilt can be made in a day! So can "Midnight Fairy Lights" and "Sew Dear"!

As I sit here and work on a presentation for quilt shop owners, I've realized that the book has much to offer. Quilts that can be made in a day! Faux piping and flange techniques! How to split the binding at the miter! Cool border treatments! How to make freehand feathers!

And what I love the most, well, the response Mom has gotten from having those quilts with her in the hospital. Seems everyone just loves quilts, and many wish they had them! You can see in her expression how proud she is to have them, they set her apart! Everyone remarks how much she must be loved! And you can watch her stroke them and feel the comfort they bring her! So can you blame me for wanting to make a few more?

Mom, I love you! And oh how I want you to get better! I'll make you as many quilts as you can handle, each one a little different, yet each one made with love!

Montana: One Week

Hi All!

Been here in Montana for one week now, and with Mom still in the hospital, have had plenty of time to sit, hand sew, watch, and reflect.

I gave Mom 2 quilts at the hospital, one "just cuz" and one to be her "therapy" (chemo) quilt. Both quilts just easy, lap size projects, yet both truly appreciated by all who see them! Doctors, nurses, therapists, dieticians, friends, and family. It amazes me how quilts speak to all of us!

In a world wrecked by cancer, wearied by the drugs to treat it, Mom has found a small measure of joy, comfort and warmth by having those quilts grace her hospital bed. And I, like every little girl who once wished she had a magic wand, but found out she didn't, am so Thankful I was able to give her this one small gift!

Never forget that quilts are so much more than the scraps they're made of...they're part of the fabric of our lives, interwoven with others, and measured in value by the joy we give to those who love them!

God Bless! I mean a r-e-a-l-l-y long trip? I have lists on top of lists! All to , I hope, keep me from forgetting something I might really need!

Oh there's the usual suspects...clothes, pajamas, toilettries, but then there's the important stuff..sewing machine, notions, and lots and lots of fabric! A mat, ruler and cutter, scissors, pins and thread! oh, and of course, the quilts that are part of the trunk show!

I suppose I could go on and on, but the bottom line is, when traveling to far away places, take what you can, buy what you forget! Lists are just pieces of paper I'll soon throw away!

As I travel to Montana, I hope your thoughts and prayers will be with my Mother in law. A very special lady having a very tough time! It seems we are inundated with "cancer awareness" ads and new and more promising treatments, but getting the diagnosis is just plain scary! I know we have a tough road ahead and all these lists do is give me something to focus on, something else to think about. That's OK I think, we all find our solace in different things. My hope is that Mom can find a way to cope too, because while I'll be there for her, she's still the one who has to 'take it on'!

So with that said, I think I'll go finish the binding on her "therapy" quilt. More later....
Karen

Bring on the Retreats

Hi All!

Just went on a Retreat, sponsored by the Waterford Guild and the Haymarket Qu Chapter. And it came at a time when I really needed it! Sometimes, you don't even realize how much you need the fellowship that other quilters offer. Just seems like 'life' was kinda spinning out of control....work, kids, book, events, Mother in law diagnosed with cancer.

So, the opportunity to slip away, even for a few days, was a wonderful respite. It's not that you forget your responsibilities, but it does give you the chance to 'just breathe', reflect, and even 'indulge'. I got to talk alot, listen more, laugh uproariously, eat till I was busting at the seams, and yes, get a few things done!

I made my Mother-in-law a "therapy" quilt, and was able to knock out two other tops. Love that Sunkissed Roses pattern, 3 tops in 2 days! Now, of course, I'm back and just have to get them quilted and bound. But, restored and refreshed by the friendships, I have a brighter outlook, a spring in my step, and most importantly, hope for the future.

So, if life starts spinning out of control, take a moment, go on a Retreat. Do what you love to do! It's amazing how just those few moments can restore a little 'balance'!

Prayers Please

Have had a good week, and also a bad one. Did 6 book signings last week, attended a huge quilt show, and found out my mother-in-law has cancer. I've hesitated posting, I suppose because everything is still so fresh, and it's scary!

Now, I've been able to do some research, am (I hope) over the shell-shock, and ready to move forward. I think the hardest part of any process is the "unknown". It seems whenever we're confronted with something, and we have to wonder "what if", we are paralized. Yet, once we know what we're up against...well, the fighting instinct takes over, and we're ready to "deal".

Mom's oncology appointment is Thursday, surgical appointment is Friday. So, what I ask today... if you are willing, well, say a prayer for Jennie Miles, one of the absolute, greatest women I've ever known! I am in awe of her, frankly, have always been! She can do anything! But, I guess, this is one fight where I feel more comfortable knowing we have a 'whole bunch of back-up'.

Thank you all. God be with you!
Karen

First Trunk Show and Book Signing

OK, so the book has finally come out, and I had the opportunity to go to Chesapeake yesterday to do two Trunk Shows and Book Signings. So...what is it about 'public speaking' that puts the fear of God into everyone, me included? I didn't just have butterflies, there was a marching band in there!!!

But, can I say that it was fun? I mean, what can be better than sharing what you love with other like minded people? There are so many styles of quilting, from traditional to contemporary, so many fabrics, colors and options! And that's part of what makes it so cool! We each put our own stamp, flavor, and personality into our work, and while we might not endeavor to master all styles, we sure seem able to appreciate them!

And, last but HARDLY least, quilters are just a great group of people! I feel so fortunate to have met some of the greatest gals (and guys) through quilting. Take Doris, the owner of A Different Touch; she's just as beautiful on the inside as the outside, and I want to Thank Her for allowing me to come to her shop yesterday. I met some very talented people there, who's Show and Tell both inspired and motivated me. Thanks to All of you for making me feel so welcome!

Gosh I love quilting...and the people who are part of it!

A Look Behind and A Look Ahead

Shoo wee! What a week! Last week I posted about the snow and if I thought I wanted it gone then, well, today, I'm even more sure! Friday and most of Saturday, we had 'near blizzard' conditions and a snow accumulation of about 26-28 inches!

Power went out about 10 Friday night and came back on around 6PM Saturday. No heat, but hey, one good thing about being a quilter...there were plenty of 'blankets' to go around!!!

So that's the "look behind". Ahead, well, the book release is set for Tuesday. I didn't think that day would ever get here, and as you can imagine, I'm pretty excited. All the gals at our Guild meeting on Thursday gave me a beautiful potted plant to say "Congratulations", which threatened to make me cry, but also brought home what a special group quilters are! I am truly glad that my sister dragged me into that quilt shop all those years ago! It's been a Blessing, one I count every day!

Snow, Snow, Go Away!

OK, I've got to admit that I absolutely LOVE the first snowfall. There's something so fresh, pristine and beautiful about all that white, how it falls, silently coating the ground. But, the other side of that coin, is that I never learned how to drive in it, and by gosh, by golly, its darn right COLD!

As beautiful as it is initially, I MUST admit that I long to be warm, to be able to drive without fear of ending up in a ditch, and let's face it, no more unscheduled "snow days" for the kids! I thought a "snow day" would be a God-send; hmmm....what can I do? Maybe I'll sew! But instead, it's managing kids, meals, wet, and warmth! So today, I say, "Come on Spring"! Bring me your gentle breezes, your beautiful flowers and the promise of something good to come!

In the meantime, as I wait for Spring, the weatherman says 1-3 inches tomorrow, and another snow storm this weekend. Was recently contacted by a shop that wants to hang about 10 quilts (kind of a one woman show) for a month prior to a book signing. Yes, only 2 weeks to go till the book comes out! Only problem is, I was lax and didn't put hanging sleeves or labels on any of the quilts!
So here I am, sewing my little heart out...12 sleeves and 12 labels. One could make the case for doing it as you go along, rather than having to play 'catch up' later. And, in fact, that's what I should have done!
I think all of us know the importance of putting labels on; it's a great way to document the quilt...when it was made, who made it, even who it was for and why it was created! I know that, I've always known that! Yet here I am, trying to get done what should have already been done!
So in the future, I vow to make sure I finish the whole quilt and nothing but the whole quilt! Do I hear an "Amen"?

Progress

Been a good week, at least I think so. Did get a chance to get in my sewing room, put the borders on my "Blooming Tree of Life" and "Bears Paw with Claws" and have been diligently working on the trapunto design for the center space in the Tree of Life quilt. Pretty good for a gal who can't draw a straight line with a ruler!

Now...if I can translate that sketch into the actual quilting?!? But, hey, that's the fun part, right? At least it's always a surprise. Sometimes we start on one direction, and wind up in another. That's part of what I love about quilting; you do have the creative freedom to go in the direction that it leads.

I remember one quilt I designed years ago, a "Truly Feathered Feathered Star". I had made all the blocks, just had to sew them together. Well, my daughter was supposed to be taking a nap, but when I went to check on her, she was in my sewing room, cutting my blocks apart! Yikes!!!!! Without enough fabric to re-make the blocks, I drew a peacock (a feathered star in his own right) and made him the center focal point of the quilt. See, start in one direction, and end in another! That's where creative freedom can be a true blessing!

So, we'll see...where will this quilt take me? I guess we'll find out once the stitching begins!

"Sew In"

Sometimes there's just nothing better than getting together with other quilters for a "Sew In". Our guild had one the other day, and I have to say that I'm so glad I went. It had been a tough week, like many others this cold...brrr...winter, I found myself 'laid up' for a few days.

But, tired as I was, still not feeling great, I decided to go. And the funny thing is, it made me feel better! I guess it's just being able to 'connect' with others, that shared passion for the art of quilting, and the inspiration that always seems to be there. I love seeing what everyone is working on; sitting, sewing, chatting, laughing; it's all there, in one little room!

Thanks Ladies, I had a great time, got some work done, and enjoyed being with you all. Next time I need a boost, Calgon won't be taking me away, a "Sew In" will!

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year All!

Been awhile since I posted; I suppose that's why those New Years Resolutions come in so handy! Along with all the other life stlyle changes I need to make, posting regularly and connecting with other quilters is one that's at the top of the list!
So...what's new??? Still working full time, still a wife and mother (Thank God!) and anxiously awaiting the release of the book in February! Just before Christmas, Martingale sent me an advance copy of the book and a really gorgeous floral arrangement. You know, it all seems like a dream, that is until you hold it in your hand!
That's when the hope and the fear truly sets in! Hope that the book does well, and fear that it won't! With that said, I can at least say that my husband and kids are proud....and that's the BEST feeling of all! They presented me with a framed copy of the cover on Christmas, and YES! I admit, I cried like a baby! They had written an inscription that reads as follows:

If you can believe it, you can achieve it. You're living proof that dreams really do come true. We're extremely proud of you Mom!

Now, well.., thru all the blood, sweat and tears, I realize I'd do it all again, just to know I made my family proud!
Karen

Page Proofs Here

Ok, So this was pretty exciting! The "page proofs" from Martingale arrived as promised. Upon opening the package and leafing through them, I was so struck...almost made me cry! It's surreal, to say the least, to see your hard work, in color, in what will soon be a book! I suppose it made it "real" for me, in a way it hasn't been before!
I owe such a huge THANK YOU! to my husband, Vince. Without his belief, love and support, this would never have happened! It's funny how one person can see things in you that you can't see in yourself. It makes me hope that somehow, some way, I can similiarly inspire someone else, that maybe I see something they can't, that I inspire them to "try"! Vince and I celebrated our 24th anniversary. Don't laugh, we went to Denny's for breakfast! Had to work that day, so we couldn't go out to dinner, so we opted for breakfast! We got a few laughs out of it as we were sitting in the booth eating our eggs!

But, later in the week he sure surprised me. Bought me a new car! It's a beaut, and I love it. And truly, I was so surprised! We're not the "big present" kind of people, we just never could do that kind of thing. But the kids are growing, yikes, scary thought that! Wayne 18, Shannah 16 this summer, and Travis 14 this summer. So the need for another vehicle is certainly there.

Anyhow, guess my message is...Life is good. Am married to the greatest guy, would marry him again in a heartbeat, kids are wonderful (well, most of the time...they are kids afterall!), am sewing and having fun, and am Blessed with the best of friends! Have to give it up to my editors, Laurie Baker and Sheila Ryan! They sure know what they're doing! I have to go through everything and return, then in August I get the first page proofs. The commercial, seems to promise that Calgon will transport you to a better place, one free of stress, immersed in relaxation! While I enjoy a good bath, I've never been 'truly transported'. And I've tried all the extras...candlelight, soft, easy music. If nothing else, I suppose I come out clean!
Quilting however, has that ability to 'take me away'! Some good music, a few 'loose threads', some fabric 'to die for', and I'm lost! Yes, truly taken away, losing all sense of time, forgetful of all that needs to be done! You know...things like cleaning, eating, etc. In my own little world, I eagerly anticipate the next, new creation! I can't wait to see the fruits of my labor; hmmm, is it labor when you're doing something you love?
Today, I vow to have more "Calgon, take me away" moments (or days). What an absolutely great group of woman! You never know how well everyone will get along, but this was probably the most cohesive group I've had the pleasure to sew with and get to know! If you were there, Thank You!

It's always inspiring to go on a Retreat...not only do you have the opportunity to get alot done, but because of the diversity of each person there, you get the chance to see other projects. For me, they seem to always give me new ideas, you know, visions of sugar plums, woops! quilts! dancing in my head!

I thought with all the stress (yes, doing the book did cause a wee bit of stress) that I probably wouldn't even want to see a sewing machine for quite some time. Yet, when I got home, all I wanted to do was sew! And I still feel that way. I have a million things to do, clean, cook, put the Christmas stuff away, and I just want to hurry up and 'get er done' so I can once again immerse myself in a new project! Ironic, isn't it?

Well, with that said, I have re-vamped my prairie point technique, so am posting a pic of the Bear's Paw with Claws block that will be used in a new quilt. I think it looks cool. Let me know your thoughts! The small pink triangles are the prairie points, and they'll really "pop" once they're quilted. I'll tell you, I took this week off in order to finish everything up. I figured I'd be less stressed without the burden of work, and be able to finish in a leisurely manner.
What I didn't count on was spending most of my Monday and Tuesday at the Doctor's, then in the hospital with a raging case of food poisoning! I have NEVER, ever been so sick or in so much pain! If you've never had it, Amen! I wouldn't wish it on anyone!!!
So here it is, Thursday. I have a follow-up Doctor's appointment, then hopefully I'm off and running. What was going to be a 'leisurely', non stressful week of finishing touches has become a race against time! I wonder, why is it that something ALWAYS happens when you're up against the clock? So, as I said in my last post, when the going gets tough...well, I better get going!!!
I WILL get this done, with bucket by my side if I have to! Wish me luck, I surely could use it!

Almost There!

One and a half weeks to go until all needs to be submitted. To say that I've been working at a frantic pace would probably be the understatement of the year!!!! Seems I eat, live, breathe, sleep (rarely) this project.
My thumb has holes in it from pushing the needle during the hand sewing of the bindings, and I swear I have permanent knots of muscle tension in my neck, shoulders and back! Yet, somehow, I imagine when all is said and done, that it'll be worth it.
One thing for sure, I couldn't have done this without the encouragement and help of my friends and family. For instance, (can't believe I'm going to admit this) but we still have all our Christmas decorations up. And no one seems to care! They all know I have the deadline, so they know it'll get done when it gets done. Worst case scenario, we can always hang Easter eggs on it!
And I've been Blessed with friends that not only listen (for the umpteenth time), but also encourage and help! One thing this whole evolution has proven, that when the going gets tough, the tough get going, or they rely on family and friends to help them! Thanks everyone!!!!!

Making Progress

Well, I'm happy to report that I am, at last, feeling like I've made some progress. Yeah!! In the last couple of weeks, I've gotten 2 more quilts pieced, 3 quilted, and all but 2 of my "sample" blocks made! At night (sometimes as early as 3 AM) I've been working on the bindings and writing of instructions! All this while working, and of course, doing all the myriad tasks a Mom and wife must do! Whew!!!
This has been an amazing journey. While I'm excited about having a book published, there are days when I am also terrified! I'm not sure if I can explain it, but, it's like laying bare a piece of you, to be judged by other people! Here I've put my heart and soul into something, but what if no one likes it?
I suppose it's just a gamble you take. and you know what? It's OK. I have learned that I can do more than I ever thought possible, I am TRULY blessed with the love and support of my family and friends, and that I can, somehow, enjoy the process! Whether a success or not, I'm proud of the work I've done, and glad I 'rolled the dice'. If nothing else, I have several beautiful new quilts to enjoy for years and years to come!

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year Everyone! I hope all of you had a great holiday, as did I. It's surprising how quickly it came...and went! Seems like the kids just got out of school for their break, and today they returned!
As I sit here, writing this, getting ready to go down to my sewing room, I can't help but hope that I manage my time a little better this year! Appears as though I'm constantly rushing to and fro, with sometimes little to show for all my efforts! And, I have quite a lot to do this year...especially these next couple of months!
I still have 2 quilts to make, 6 to quilt, and all the sample blocks to make for the book. And all of this HAS to be sent out by the 1st of March! YIKES!!!!! Of course, I still get to be a wife, play Mom, cook, clean, ferry, etc, and, oh yes, work!
Somehow, I know it'll all get done, hopefully without me losing my mind! Guess that's where the 'time management' comes in! So, will keep you all posted on my progress...that is, if I can find the time!

Ouch! That hurt!

Well, here I sit, and sit is the operative word! Wednesday morning I got up, and having had only a partial cup of coffee, decided to stoke the fire. Holding a huge log in one hand, poking the coals with the other, I thought I had it all under control. That is, until the log dropped!

Right on my foot. Ever had one of those experiences? Your mind is telling you, uh-oh, this is gonna hurt, yet you are powerless to do anything? Can't move quick enough, can't catch the log! Of course, I moved pretty quick after it hit!!! But, the damage was already done!

So, as the saga continues, I spent most of the day at the doc's, then the ER. After the x-rays, they offered me a wheelchair. Up to that time, I'd walked everywhere. I knew then that I'd broken my foot! Which was confirmed. Broke one bone, chipped another! But the good news is, it's not my sewing foot!

I knew one day I'd figure out a way to get more sit and sew time....just didn't realize it would hurt so much! The moral of the story...use 2 hands when handling logs, and for heavens sake, keep your feet out of the way! More later, Karen

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://theniftyneedle.blogspot.com/2008/12/ouch-that-hurt.html' title='Ouch! The hustle and bustle of the season has truly begun. I trust and hope that you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving. It's hard to believe that Christmas is around the corner, and then, a new year!
I love this time of year. Taking out the decorations, the ooh's and aah's of the kids as they see their favorite ornaments. The excitement and anticipation in their eyes! Everything looks so festive, the kitchen almost always smells great with all those traditional holiday treats baking, and the music we listen to only at this time fills our homes.
Yes, it's a wonderful time of year. This year, like many of you, I find myself "scrambling" to finish up those projects I wanted to have done for gifts. I count the days, look at the hours, and wonder..."How will I get it all done?" Maybe if I cut out sleeping?! I seem to do this to myself every year, so maybe next year, I should start in January!
Regardless, I am determined to enjoy the process. I usually get a little "stressed"...trying to find the perfect gift, make the perfect meal, be the perfect Mom, wife, daughter, friend. This year, although I'm sure I'll still try, I realize that the perfect gift doesn't come from a store. It's quite simply the love and friendship we extend to each other every day. The perfect meal won't come from my kitchen, but one made from loving hands will. And try as I might, I'll never be the perfect anything. Instead, I'll just be me and hope that that's enough!
So, have a Happy Holiday, don't get stressed, and give, give, give all the love you can!

Book Report

I love the title of this post, it makes me feel like a kid again, back in school, having to do a 'book report'. The truth of the matter is though, it's been a really long time since I went to school, and I just wanted to give you all an update.
I did receive the contracts, and with shaky hand, I also signed them. Now the hard work begins! The first samples are due in December with the bulk of the manuscript, all completed projects, instructions, photos, and illustrations due early next year.
I had no idea how much went into this. To say I was clueless, would be an understatement! But like many people, when challenged, we somehow find the resolve to meet those challenges. And like many people, I count myself lucky to have great friends willing to pitch in and help!
I feel certain this will be one of those 'life lessons' for me. But, truth be told, I'm looking forward to it. There can be no reward without risk, no victory without a struggle. As the days go by, and I find myself closer to those deadlines, I hope and pray I find the fortitude to 'press on'. That's what makes all of us so great, the ability to rise to the occassion. I've evidenced it by others on a much greater scale, am encouraged by their examples, and am ready, right now, to get to work! Wish me luck!

Quilts are more than the sum of their parts

I know, I know, I lapsed! This new job has proven to be much more time consuming than I'd originally thought. But, excuses, excuses, RIGHT?

I did have a few people from my new job over recently. You know how it is, as you're trying to get to know people, you ask ALOT of questions...family? kids? music? hobbies? etc???

When I told my new co-workers that one of my greatest joys was quilting, they just kinda 'shrugged it off'. Visions of quilts made from shirts and dresses must have been dancing through their heads! However, as they came here, I saw their visions change.

Most of my quilts are very traditional, but I do have a few of those "artsy" ones hanging around. When everyone saw this one, I believe their opinions of quilting changed. They leaarned, as have I, that quilts can be hung on walls, be decorative, even hold 'center stage'. But mostly, what quilts bring us is joy and comfort. They give us warmth. They bring back memories. Somehow, surrounded by one, we feel nurtured, safe, and secure.

Quilts are much more than the scraps they're made of; they are part of the fabric of our lives. How wonderful it is to be a quilter, how happy I am to be one!

What a Week!

This has been quite a week. You know the kind I mean...running around like a chicken with it's head cut off! Not sure if you're coming or going! For example, I went to the mall the other day, to purchase some new clothes as it's getting rather cold. And I was really frustrated, because as I was reading the signs, everything was supposed to be open by 10. At about quarter after, I asked another person sitting on a bench if they happened to know why the stores hadn't opened yet? She replied by saying that they didn't open till 11 on Sundays. I had my days so mixed up, I hadn't even realized it was Sunday!

Well, such is life! Some days just go by so fast! I am happy to announce that Stacie, Phyllis' daughter, had her baby. A happy, healthy little girl. Mother, father, and grandmother all having a great time as they celebrate a new life!! What an exciting time, but, like me, they may find the days passing in a blur!

As for me, this week, I'm trying to keep my days straight, accomplish something in my sewing room, and somehow, enjoy the process! You know, maybe the days passing quickly is a Blessing. Better to be busy, happily going from one thing to the next, than to be dreading another long, boring day. So far, my days haven't been boring, so think I'll just decide to be Thankful! It sure beats the alternative!

Good News.....I Think!

As you all know, my greatest passion outside of my family, is quilting. While living in Italy, I rarely got a chance to sew. None of my friends quilted there, they didn't have fabric shops, and unfortunately, we didn't always have reliable electricity. So, at that time, I started playing with designing quilts.

My husband, Vince, has long encouraged me to try and publish. For some reason, he's always believed in me, even when I could find no belief in myself! Finally, prodded one too many times, I submitted some patterns with a book idea to a publishing company. That was several months ago, and finally, yesterday!, I got an e-mail saying the proposal had been approved, and the contracts would be put in the mail.

WOW! WOW! WOW! I'm not even sure what to say! Even though it is not a 'done deal', I still feel like dancing!!! I can't help but be a little excited.

So...Thank God for my husband! Without his continual encouragement I may never have tried this. He is my love, my life, and we are "Better Together". I hope you all will join me, join me in hope and prayer. That I can and will meet all the deadlines. That this will work out. And hopefully, that a new quilting book called "Better Together" is soon on a shelf in a quilt shop near you!

Monumental Decision

Well, today I made a monumental decision, and commitment. It is one I have made before, without long term success, but, with hope springing eternal, I am praying that this time it sticks!
I have decided to quit smoking. I've ordered the medication, which is supposed to help, and am working on all the reasons why this is a good decision. You see, I've smoked for 35 years. Yikes! And quite frankly, am tired of being a 'slave' to cigarettes.
What prompted this? My husband, who was taking a creative writing class, had as an assignment a persuasive essay...persuade a friend to quit smoking. As a challenge, I decided to do this essay as well. Mine was called "The Letter", and I wrote it, from one friend to another, upon her deathbed. Well, by the time I'd finished, I was in tears, real ones!
And I realized that could be me! It was, and still is, a real "wake up call". Guess I'll walk around with that essay tucked into my pocket, ready to read should I consider wavering. 35 years of a habit may be hard to break, but God willing, with love and hope, prayer and commitment, this time I'll make it.
Wish me luck! I need it!

Quilters Quarter Salad

Hi You All!

Wanted to post a recipe as this is a great end of summer salad. I call it the "Quilters Quarter" salad because the dressing is a variation of a quarter of something! It's really great, very simple, and has been served at many a Bee and Retreat. So...hope you enjoy!

Dressing:
1/4 Cup Apple Cider Vinegar
1/4 Cup Sugar
1/4 Cup Oil
1/4 tsp. garlic salt
1/4 tsp. celery salt

Mix all above and refrigerate. I like to serve this over a salad of baby romaine, cucumber, 1/4 cup raisins, 1/4 cup craisins, 1/4 cup cashews, almonds, or pecans, diced strawberries and shaved parmesan cheese. Just shake up the dressing and toss with salad immediately prior to serving. Bon appetit'!

Old Favorites

First, I apologize for the lapse in posting. these last few weeks have been quite harried! I've been trying to find the balance.....you know the one.....between work, home, the kids, the committments. How to get it all done!

I suppose that's why I decided to make this quilt. It's one of the first patterns I designed, and quite frankly, just an 'old favorite'. Very simple to make, it's just one block, in four colorways. It makes me smile when I see it. There's just something so soft and sweet about it.

It reminds me of my childhood. We use to get these pastel colored candy dots on paper, similar to an adding machine tape. We'd pop a few in our mouths, and just let the sugary sweetness melt, pocketing the rest for later. They were days of playing in the sun, chasing friends, hop scotch and jacks, innocence and fun!

I suppose, when the world gets too busy, it's relaxing to go back to an 'old favorite'. Like mac-n-cheese, it brings me comfort, transports me to simpler times. Guess it's a good thing I can't eat the quilt, but I think I might make some mac-n-cheese today!

Meeting Challenges

Meeting challenges can be fun and rewarding; they can also be mind boggling and stressful! Take the last two weeks...my gosh, I got 'schooled' just trying to get my kids ready for school! I've been to 3 orientations, hunted like a 'mad-woman' for school supplies, done medical and dental appointments, searched high and low for the hottest new trends in clothing, and filled out more paperwork than my cramped hands care to remember!

On top of that, I started a new job, and our Guild had issued a "summer challenge". We were given a paint tile and had to use that color plus at least one other color in half square triangle blocks. You would then arrange them in any manner you please. The one challenge I managed to meet!

So, YEAH!!!! school has started, the paperwork is done, and at least one challenge has been met. What's next? Who knows, but I'm sure....it'll be a challenge!

Summer's Hummers

I just Love hummingbirds, they're just so entrancing! For such tiny things, they are absolutely amazing!

I have several feeders scattered through out the yard, and often, as we sit outside, we find ourselves mesmerized by their antics. Always busy, they flit from one feeder to the next, their wings moving at an impossible rate. Yet, occassionally, you see them at rest.

There are times when I feel like a hummingbird...finding myself flitting from one project to the next, always in a hurry, in a rush to get to the next best thing! But, like them, I find I also need time to relax, to reflect. As I rush from thing to thing, worry to worry, I wonder...am I letting my busyness overcome my joy? Am I not taking the time to "smell the roses"?

So this week I read a book, took a bubble bath, played Scrabble with the kids, watched the sunset, lived, laughed and loved. And you know what? I feel renewed, revived, refreshed. Ready now to get busy again, just like "Summer's Hummers".

Time Flies!

Why is when you're having fun, time just seems to slip away? It never seems to fail! My friend, Phyllis, came for a visit last week and it seemed like one minute she was here, the next, gone! But WOW! did we ever have a great time..and we accomplished quite a bit too!

She made two baby quilts, one with chenille, and one 'crazy' quilt, a pillowcase, and managed to get two bindings on! I only managed to finish a top from a pattern I'd written and make one Tumbling Blocks quilt for the expected new arrival!

Her last full day here was, by far, the best. Another great friend, Martha, took the day off from work and the three of us had a "sew day' A mini-retreat! Golly, between the three of us we laughed (side splitting), sang, danced (a little) and sewed (alot)! It was a great, wonderful, "chicken soup for the soul" kind of day.

If you haven't had one of those in a while, I encourage you to invite a few sewing buddies over! It's always fun, never fails to inspire, and greatly enriches your life! I simply can't wait to do it again. Thanks Phyllis and Martha for the love, laughter and friendship you bring!!!

Karen

My Best friend is coming to visit!

Today, I'm getting ready for a visit from my long-time friend, Phyllis! She and I have shared alot over the years, and she's just simply, always been there for me! No matter what, no matter where, and, no matter when!

I met Phyllis at a class I taught when I first started quilting. Back then, it was "see one, do one, teach one"! She and her daughter, Stacie, took the class, and we've been fast friends ever since. Fortunately for me!!!

Phyllis was there when I broke my arm doing a ballerina, tap dance, free fall on an icy deck. And I mean she was really there! It was 4 AM when I called her, and she didn't even ask what happened, just said "I'll be right there." (See what I mean about how great my quilting buddies are?)

She's also seen me through 2 shops, flying out to Washington to help me with a really big show, mailed packages while we were stationed in Italy...you know those things you really need...like fabric, books and notions, and oh yea! Splenda, and as always, been a non-judgemental sounding board for all my grandiose ideas!

I couldn't possibly tell you just how wonderful she is, but I sincerely hope all of you have a "Phyllis" in your life!

Now, I just want to make her visit special. Her daughter is about to have her 1st child, and we'll be working on a baby quilt. In the meantime, I'll post a picture of the guest bedroom where she'll be staying. It has watercolor quilts, significant because that was the class I was teaching when I met her. Gotta run, I'm putting a little basket together of goodies I know she'll enjoy.

Until next time,

Karen
